The military and their health professionals are making it public that they are standing behind a post dramatic stress disorder treatment for the soldiers returning from combat zones.
For years the military would not even admit that the soldiers were suffering from anything that was "real". The symptoms that they were experiencing was made up by the soldiers so that they would qualify for benefits afforded to other soldiers who were physically injured in the line of duty. The military rarely gave any sort of benefits to any list of psychological disorders that were brought on by the stress or conditions that they were subject to while serving in zones.
They still are not giving any veteran health benefits to soldiers that were exposed to a variety of chemicals and materials that made them sick years afterwards like depleted uranium exposure.
So the military admitting to a treatment for Post dramatic stress disorder brought on by situations that they experienced during duty in combat zones is a real step forward. The treatment of choice for chemical exposure, whiplash, concussion and other brain injuries is neurofeedback.
The neurofeedback procedure that they utilize alters the way the soldier reacts and interacts with others when they are back at home. In many cases soldiers live as though they are still deployed for many months after they return home. The treatment helps reduce the symptoms quickly so that they can sleep better, reduce pain, control their irritability and anger. This treatment helps them quickly adjust to the stresses of daily life with family and work that is much different then what they have been dealing with overseas.
The military has shown that using neurofeedback in treatment has produced results in patients where they recover almost immediately from symptoms of post dramatic stress disorder.
This is important breakthrough for soldiers because of the high number of cases of depression, drug dependency and suicides that occur from stress related disorders and diseases in returning veterans.
The mental health costs are staggering. Approximately 1 billion dollars a years is spent on rehabilitating soldiers who suffer from a variety of mental disorders. The incredible success rate, the speed of recovery and the long term positive effects of neurofeedback therapy will help reduce those costs dramatically as this treatment is utilized throughout all branches of the military and becomes standard practice at all bases across the United States.
