More often in our western society today we are turning east for medical solutions. Neurofeedback is part of that trend as we look beyond body chemistry to manage disorders and diseases and their accompanying symptoms.
In the eastern meditation this has been in active use for many thousands of years. Recorded history is full of it, especially in religion of eastern cultures.
Samadhi, a meditative practice used in Hinduism and Buddhism is to help control the activities of the mind and trains you to focus your mental abilities. Trying to calm the mind down so that it can focus on very specific tasks like physical sensations such as breathing or posture control is a major part of this practice. Once you have achieved a level of control you would then utilize that learnt skill to improve your daily life in so many ways.
Controlling what you think is the first step to controlling your words and deeds. The ability to focus on what you really want to for as long as you want to is invaluable. In today's society there is so much to distract us that we have a hard time concentrating on any one thing for more then a moment. The rise of ADHD as a major issue in our children is testament to that.
We know that the body can repair itself and the mind can heal. That has been shown to us time and time again with the placebo effect. Although there are slight differences in that reasoning the basic theory holds true. We can achieve what we believe.
In medicine, neurofeedback can help us do just that. We have a hard time believing that a certain state of thinking for periods of time can effect us in many ways. Having neurofeedback to mirror back our thoughts and works for us to actively change it has had incredible effects on our body and brain. Neurofeedback training has shown that we do have control over involuntary bodily functions and we can utilize that training to improve and optimize their functionality.
Our western culture needs hard physical evidence to believe that the brain and the way we think has any real control over the physical actions of our body. Neurofeedback and the accompanying therapies have shown that it's very real. We have seen the evidence in Autism, ADHD and many stress based diseases, like hypertension.
Meditation for use in western medicine will become more accepted to treat many disorders and diseases when combined with neurofeedback training and supportive therapies. After this hits a critical mass of use then the need for neurofeedback equipment to support meditative practices for long term health will no longer be required.
